According to Interfax, the archbishop of Gorno-Altai and Chemal Kallistrat made a trip to Novolazarevskaya, which is located in the vicinity of the Queen Maud Land.

It is noted that in the presence of the participants of the 64th Russian Antarctic expedition, the archbishop consecrated a place for the construction of the chapel in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, the patron saint of travelers and sailors.

Currently, the only permanent Russian church in Antarctica is the Holy Trinity Church at Bellingshausen Station on Waterloo Island. It was opened in 2004.

In 2016, during the first ever visit of the head of the Russian Orthodox Church to Antarctica, Patriarch Kirill held a prayer service there.
