04 March 2020 The first "genetic map" of the coronavirus circulating in Italy has been traced, on the basis of the first 3 complete genomes, obtained from the Italian Sars-CoV-2 isolates circulating in Lombardy and sequenced at the Sacco hospital on 27 February.

From the work carried out by the group of Milan State University and Sacco Hospital, a first possible identikit of the viral strain that is alarming the country emerges: in the meantime, it is a single cluster of genomes isolated in other European countries (in particular in Germany and Finland ) and in countries of Central and South America, as well as the Italian block recently published by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and obtained in the area of Lodigiano.

Furthermore, the preliminary estimate of the origin time of this cluster corresponds to a period that precedes the first case highlighted in Italy on February 21 by several weeks. The ongoing analysis of further genomes, the researchers explain, will allow for more precise estimates of the entry of the virus into our country and the possible routes of spread.

The result was obtained by the group of the State University of Milan and by the Sacco Hospital, coordinated by Gianguglielmo Zehender, Claudia Balotta and Massimo Galli, the same who had isolated the 3 virus strains in the Codogno area. This was announced by the university itself. The genetic sequence shows the relationship with the viruses circulating in other European countries and confirms the origin from China.
