Elizabeth Warren will not be the first President of the United States. At least not in 2020. Her underperformance in the 14 states that voted on Tuesday, March 3, as part of the "Super Tuesday" of the Democratic primary put an end to this dream that she cherished since the launch of his candidacy in October 2018.

The progressive senator had a very bad evening. It did not win any of the 14 states involved. Worse: it even lost in its stronghold of Massachusetts, where it finished in third place, behind the now big favorites, Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders.

"Losing your home state means saying goodbye to the presidential election," said Democratic strategist Brad Bannon, interviewed by L'Express just before "Super Tuesday". "If Warren does not win Massachusetts, his campaign will be deprived of money and he will have to give up very quickly."

A fatal loss of speed

Until last October, Elizabeth Warren was at the head of several polls to the point of becoming the big favorite. His supporters even called on Bernie Sanders, then victim of a heart attack, to withdraw to unify the left of the Democratic Party behind a single candidacy.

The 70-year-old senator had found her style. As her cover of Time indicated, "she has a plan for everything". She then appears as a fighter. But this law professor also knows how to be pedagogue as when she presents her wealth tax project: “2 cents”. It is a wealth tax with a rate of 2% on each dollar beyond a fortune of 50 million dollars

“Two cents! Two cents! ”Was one of the slogans repeated by his supporters during his meetings.

But the craze finally subsided and his method changed. In the debates, she began to attack her opponents without restraint, without seeing electoral fallout. This former great slayer of Super-Pac (private organizations that can raise funds and spend an unlimited amount to support a candidate) ended up agreeing to use it. What to divert from her the most radical voters?

No victory since the start of the campaign

Elizabeth Warren has struggled since the start of the primary season. If, in the Iowa caucus, it comes in third position, with 18% of state delegates, it obtains disappointing results thereafter finishing in fourth position in New Hampshire and Nevada, collecting between 9 and 10 %. The South Carolina primary on February 29 will confirm this loss of speed since it only comes in fifth position with 7% of the votes cast.

Some supporters of Elizabeth Warren believe that even if she did not win the Democratic nomination, the votes she will have collected in the fourteen states voting for this "Super Tuesday", will allow her to continue to weigh in the campaign and promote her ideas.

Join Bernie?

If she has not yet announced to give up, Elizabeth Warren is now urged by supporters of Bernie Sanders to withdraw. She is now accused of dividing the vote of the progressive camp and of cutting the chances of the socialist senator to lead "his revolution".

"It's time to take your leave, Senator Warren," implored Wednesday morning Jacobin Mag, a pro-Sanders magazine.

After her woeful Super Tuesday results, Elizabeth Warren has next to no chance of winning more delegates than Bernie Sanders. But she has a plan for that - only it's the opposite of everything she once stood for. (And it won't even work.) Https://t.co/5YTglji7pA

The backlash is cruel when his supporters demanded the same from Bernie Sanders a few months ago.

If the two programs are relatively close (medicare for all, wealth tax ...), the two senators have distanced themselves from the start of the campaign. They continue to call themselves friends and refuse to criticize themselves publicly. However, one episode during a debate crystallized the tensions: Bernie Sanders denied having told Elizabeth Warren that a woman had no chance of winning the presidency. In return, she refused to shake his hand.

Elizabeth Warren, future VP?

After the withdrawal, early in the nomination race for California's elected official, Kamala Harris, that of moderate Amy Klobuchar on Monday and while Tulsi Gabbard remains an ultra-minority candidate, Elizabeth Warren was also the last female hopeful in the Democratic race.

Failing that, Lori Cox Han, professor of political science at Chapman University, believes that Amy Klobuchar and Elizabeth Warren are now serious candidates for the position of vice-president.

The Massachusetts senator tried to present herself as the link between the left of the party embodied by Bernie Sanders and the more centrist side of Joe Biden. If this rallying posture did not allow him to convince voters of both sides to rally around her, it could now allow him to negotiate a place on the Democratic ticket, whether on the side of Bernie Sanders or Joe Biden.

"If the Democratic Party does not have a woman on their ticket, they will deserve to lose", indicates this university, on the antenna of France 24. "And having the first vice-president of the history will open the way to a first president. "
