The National Food Agency's survey clearly shows that few municipalities measure food waste in the elderly.

- But the figures that have nevertheless been reported indicate that food waste there is greater than in school and preschool, says Karin Fritz project manager at the National Food Agency who has mapped food waste in municipal operations.

Communication between the kitchen and the elderly is one of the problems pointed out by the National Food Agency. The food is rarely cooked on site and it is difficult for the kitchen to know what is actually going on.

Norrtälje and Salem stand out

In Stockholm County, only a handful of municipalities measure the waste in care. Among these, Salem and Norrtälje have succeeded very best. Norrtälje municipality started measuring food waste already six years ago. Since then, kitchens, nursing homes and hospitals have reduced the amount of food thrown by 20 tonnes, compared to the start year 2014.
