03 March 2020Unemployment rate is stable at 9.8% in January. It is the preliminary estimate of Istat. Compared to December 2019, employment decreased in January 2020, inactivity increased and the number of unemployed increased slightly in the face of an unemployment rate that remained stable. The slight growth in people looking for work is due to the increase recorded for women (+ 2.3%, equal to + 27 thousand units), between 15-24 year olds and for those over 50; among men, on the other hand, the number of people looking for employment decreases (-1.7%, equal to -23 thousand units), as well as among 25-49 year olds. The growth of the inactive (+ 0.2%, equal to + 20 thousand units), which involves both sexes, is concentrated among the 15 34 year olds; the inactivity rate rises to 34.4% (+0.1 percentage points). Over the twelve months, the increase in the number of employed is accompanied by a decrease in the unemployed (-6.2%, equal to 166 thousand units) and inactive people between 15 and 64 years of age (-0.4%, equal to - 47 thousand).

In January, the number of employed people falls

In January, the number of employees decreased by 40,000 compared to December, equal to a drop of 0.2%. Istat reports in a note, explaining that compared to January 2019 there is an increase in the number of employees of 0.3%, equal to +76,000 units. 23,312 people were employed in the month and the unemployment rate stood at 59.1%, down 0.1 percentage points.

Youth unemployment is growing
