A French couple who had been forcibly hospitalized in Brazil were released on Friday. The two were suspected of carrying the coronavirus, but tests have ruled out any contamination, according to local authorities.

The two tourists, 54 and 57, arrived in Brazil on February 20. They went to a hospital on Thursday because of flu symptoms. Suspected of being infected by the coronavirus, the two French were involuntarily confined to the hospital. A Rio court confirmed the legality of the measure.

Restricted confinement according to the town hall

"We are relieved to leave," one of the two tourists told the Brazilian daily O Globo after leaving the hospital. She had previously called this confinement measure "madness". "We are prisoners of the hospital," she denounced.

A first case of coronavirus was confirmed this Wednesday in Brazil. According to the protocols of the Ministry of Health, hospitalization of suspect cases is not automatic but depends on the patient's state of health. The mayor said the couple only remained confined until the final test results arrived.
