by Tiziana Di Giovannnadrea 02 March 2020 The United Nations envoy and head of the UN mission in Libya (Unsmil), Ghassan Salamé, has announced on his Twitter profile that he has directly entrusted the post to the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, for health reasons.

Ghassan Salamé said: "I have worked for more than two years to bring together Libyans, to curb external interference and to preserve the unity of the country. I have asked the Secretary-General of the United Nations to be relieved of my mission, hoping that it will be achieved peace and stability in Libya ''.

Furthermore, he added: "I admit that my health no longer allows me to sustain this rhythm of stress." Salamé then recalled that "the Berlin Conference took place, there was UN Resolution 2510 and three paths for peace in Libya were started despite some reluctance. ''

The issue of external interference and the constant attempt to rebuild a minimum of consensus among the powers that influence Libya and that strongly affect the peace process in Libya have always been at the center of Salamé's work even during the work of the Fifth Edition of the Rome MED conference - Mediterranean Dialogues 2019.
