Emmanuel Macron on Saturday called on Turkey and Russia to establish "a lasting cease-fire" in the Idlib region of Syria, in separate telephone interviews with Russian presidents and the like, the Elysee said in a communicated.

The Head of State expressed to his counterparts, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, "his very strong concern over the ongoing humanitarian disaster" and the risks "of dispersal of terrorist groups caused by the military offensive of the Syrian regime and its allies and the questioning of the arrangements for autumn 2018 in the province of Idlib ”.

"Respect international humanitarian law"

Emmanuel Macron stressed “the imperative of an immediate cessation of hostilities” and called on “Russia and Turkey to establish a lasting and verifiable cease-fire in accordance with the commitments made to France and Germany during the Quadripartite Summit from Istanbul to autumn 2018 ”, continues the French Presidency.

To this end, he called on Russia to "put an immediate end to the military offensive in the northwest of Syria and to respect international humanitarian law, the protection of civilians, personnel and humanitarian access".

The head of state also expressed his condolences to Turkey "following the attack on Turkish forces in north-western Syria". He "praised Turkey's efforts to help the Syrian refugees and assured her of its full solidarity in this regard". The French president finally called on Turkey "to cooperate on the management of migratory flows".
