It was during Wednesday that the water level in Valdemarsvik's harbor rose to over a meter and the harbor was filled with water and became powerless.

- It was surprising that the water rose so much and filled the center so quickly, says Martine Christensen Odenhall, sector manager for community building and culture in Valdemarsvik municipality.

This is not the first time that Valdemarsvik has been hit by floods. In the past, rainfall has accumulated and the grocery store has been hit hard. Although in this case it is a rising sea level, the situation may arise again due to climate change which means more extreme weather.

Protective Barriers

The municipality is now looking at how similar scenarios should be avoided.

- Above all, it is about accuracy in upcoming buildings and detailed planning, especially at the harbor, quays, says Martine Christensen Odenhall.

She also says that the municipality should now look into possible protection barriers.

- We will look at the most sensitive points. At the opening we have a sensitive place and that is where water first poured in. We need to take a closer look at this as soon as the water has receded.
