In December, the Skurup City Council made a decision to impose a ban on school. Since then, the debate about the new ban has grown.

Naouel Aissaoui is a teacher in Skurup and wears a veil. Shortly after the decision was pushed through, she participated and organized a counter-demonstration. She thinks the decision is based on racism and xenophobia.

Hard to meet in the debate

In SVT's "Meeting", she gets to meet Loubna Stensåker Göransson (M), local politician and chair of the school and education committee in Skurup. She is one of those behind the decision to ban bans.

- I do not feel that my veil goes against Sweden's laws and values. But your decision goes against Sweden's values and human rights, says Naouel Aissaoi when she meets her counter-debater.

"It's the school's responsibility - not yours"

But Loubna Stensåker Göransson believes that the veil is an expression of reverence and something that does not belong in school.

- That parents should force a girl to wear a veil - it is an expression of honor. And we want that view away from our society, especially from school. We stand for democratic principles and equality, she says.

- It is the school's responsibility to act if we suspect coercion, not you, contradicts Naouel Aissaoui.

Supported by political majority

Loubna Stensåker Göransson emphasizes that Naouel Aussaoi and other municipal employees should accept the decision because the ban is supported by a political majority.

- It feels very strange. She is an immigrant, a Muslim and a woman, she should have more understanding, says Naouel Aissaoui.
