February 29, 2020 The polling stations for political elections are opened in Slovakia this morning. About 4.5 million Slovaks are called to vote for the renewal of Parliament over the next five years. The favorite is the anti-corruption movement 'Common people and independent personalities' (Olano) of the leader Igor Matovic.

The latest polls show the defeat of the social democrats of Smer whose leader is the ex premier Robert Fico, in power since 2006.

The elections are conditioned by the killing of the journalist Jan Kuciak, who investigated political corruption and was killed on commission in February 2018. The trial, which involved a wealthy businessman linked to the political world, mobilized public opinion.

The protest votes against the establishment also gather the extremists of our People's Party Slovakia of Marian Kotleba. Of the 25 parties, movements and coalitions in contention, seven could exceed the barrier of 5%. The polling stations will close at 10 pm and exit polls are foreseen, the results will be known at night.
