- We follow the development very closely and we know that the situation is very strained. This will not make things better, but you can expect it to be an even more difficult situation, she says.

The aid organization has no staff at the border where people gathered this weekend in an attempt to get into Greece. On the other hand, refugees and migrants are given medical assistance elsewhere in Greece, including outside the notorious Morial camp on the island of Lesbos.

"There are terrible human conditions, a situation of full camps and people who have reached a limit to what they can handle," says Kisswani.

Want to make an effort in Idlib

At the same time, the biggest refugee crisis in Syria is ongoing since the civil war broke out in 2011. Nearly a million people have fled the government army's offensive in Idlib province and sought refuge on the border with Turkey.

"The situation is terrible," says Kisswani.

Health centers have had to close due to shelling, and refugee families sleep in tents, in houses without roofs or under the open sky in the winter cold, she says.

The border has so far been closed, both for Syrians who want to get out and for aid organizations who want to get in. Doctors Without Borders has asked Turkey to open the border to be able to make an emergency response, but no positive message had yet to come when SVT spoke with Kisswani on Saturday night.

The plans are to send in medical personnel and equipment, as well as blankets, clothes and floorboards that can prevent people from sleeping directly on the ground.
