If the size of a municipality determines the number of deputy mayors and municipal councilors to be elected, it also governs the amount of their salary, as well as that of the mayor. The salaries of elected officials from the three largest cities in France, Paris, Lyon and Marseille, come under special cases.

Not all mayors receive the same salary. Their remuneration is defined according to the number of inhabitants in their municipality. The same goes for the salaries of assistants and other municipal councilors. These remunerations can be increased in certain cases, in particular when the commune is chief town or when it is classified tourist station. The salary of mayors

The minimum salary of a mayor is 645.25 euros: it concerns the mayors of municipalities with less than 500 inhabitants. In an average city with between 20,000 and 50,000 inhabitants, the mayor's salary is 3,421.32 euros per month. The mayor of a municipality with more than 100,000 inhabitants receives 5,512.13 euros.

The mayors of the three largest cities in France, Paris, Lyon and Marseille, receive their own remuneration which exceeds 8,000 euros. Thus, the mayor of Paris receives 8,650.59 euros per month, the mayor of Lyon 8,227.07 euros per month and the mayor of Marseille 8,137 euros per month. The salaries of the mayors of the boroughs of these three cities are also subject to special cases.

The salary of assistants and municipal councilors

Like the monthly allowances of the mayors, the remuneration of the assistants and the municipal councilors depends on the number of inhabitants which counts their commune. Again, the salaries of the deputies and municipal councilors of the town halls of Paris, Lyon and Marseille fall under specific cases. If the deputy mayor of a municipality with less than 500 inhabitants receives 250.90 euros per month, those of a city with more than 200,000 inhabitants receive 2.756.07 euros per month. The deputies to the mayor of Paris are the best paid, with a salary of 4,855 euros per month.

The municipal councilors receive less than the deputy mayor. Moreover, the municipal councilors of the communes of less than 100,000 inhabitants do not receive any salary, doing voluntary work. On the other hand, municipal councilors of municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants receive 228.09 euros per month. In Lyon and Marseille, city councilors earn 1,304.98 euros and 1,856 euros respectively per month. Finally, the municipal councilors at the Paris City Hall are the best paid. They receive, in effect, a salary amounting to 4,807.62 euros per month.
