A French citizen, kidnapped Tuesday February 25 in Haiti, was released Thursday evening. She works for the World Food Program in Port-au-Prince and it was the UN agency that confirmed the news of her release on Friday. For more than two months, the security situation has dangerously worsened in the Caribbean country.

From our correspondent in Haiti,

The World Food Program employee was kidnapped in the heart of the Haitian capital late Tuesday afternoon. The victim, whose identity has not been made public, was therefore held captive for 48 hours by unidentified individuals. Friday morning, the UN agency, based in Rome, said that this French citizen was released "safely".

This abduction adds to the long list of villainous abduction cases. Since the end of 2019, these crimes have been on the increase in the capital Port-au-Prince, but also in provincial towns.

Impossible to assess the precise extent of the phenomenon, because many cases are not made public: to prevent the amount of the ransom demanded from increasing drastically, many prefer not to spread the word about the kidnapping of one of their relatives and prefer not to contact the police.

This worsening of the security situation pushes people living in Haiti to reduce their displacements: many streets of the capital are thus deserted at nightfall.
