A motorist was killed late Friday afternoon driving his car on a highway that crosses the north of Marseille, we learned from concordant sources, confirming information from the daily La Provence.

Targeted by gunfire, "the driver has died," said a police source. The investigation, which must be entrusted to the judicial police, will in particular determine his identity. According to the police headquarters, it was too early Friday evening to determine whether it could be a settling of accounts between criminals.

The events occurred around 5 p.m. in the Lyon-Marseille direction, at the Aygalades, a district in the 15th arrondissement. When they arrived, and for almost an hour, the firefighters tried to revive the victim, a 40-year-old man on cardio-ventilatory arrest. He was finally pronounced dead at 6 p.m. on the spot, added a source familiar with the matter. The highway has been cut. A total of 18 firefighters and seven of their vehicles are involved in this operation.
