Since the start of the season, the young players of Racing Mutest Académie, the training center of RC Strasbourg, have acquired a new habit at the end of training. They all go to the physical trainer assigned to their team and give them a score, from 1 to 10.

“They must tell us how they felt about the session in terms of fatigue. The higher the rating, the harder they found it, ”explains Anasthase Massamba . It is he, already holder of a Master in Staps (Sciences and techniques of physical and sports activities) which is at the origin of the study. It is part of her thesis, carried out under the aegis of Thomas Hurreau, lecturer at the University of Strasbourg.

"The process will take place over three years"

"The goal, ultimately, is to prevent injuries to players," says the researcher, without wanting to rush things. The process will take place over three years. “This year, we will first be collecting data, whether subjective like this, or objective with the support of GPS. The devices, which already equip the professional group, were thus supplied to the National 3 reserve team and to the national U19s.

"In total, on a workout, you can compile up to a hundred clues," says Anasthase Massamba, referring to the number of kilometers traveled, top speed but also heart rate, etc. Without forgetting, therefore, the famous note that players slide to the physical trainer.

"On weekends, they must also complete a quiz on their feelings for the past week," adds the doctoral student, who is based on 65 questions. Example: "Were you relaxed?" Sad ? Happy ? Anxious? ". With a possible choice among five each time: “not at all, a little, moderately, a lot, extremely. "

“At the beginning, it is certain that many young people had doubts and hesitated to answer honestly, admits Anasthase Massamba. But when they were shown that it was in their interest not to lie given the complexity of the calculations, they understood. "

A gain for the professional team?

No need to fear a bet on the bench! Even if an attacker admits the difficulty of a session, this will not necessarily prevent him from playing the next match. "It will just give us an alert because if it scores 9 where it scored 7 for the same training two weeks earlier, maybe it should be unloaded a little," says Thomas Hurreau, who hopes to individualize as well as possible physical preparations.

"That, we will only be able to do when we have crossed all our data with the injuries contracted by the players. Again, we note from the start of the season where and under what conditions the players hurt each other, whether it is with contact or not etc., continues the specialist in neuromuscular fatigue. With all that, I hope we can define precise markers and say, be careful, we must avoid this exercise for him or reduce this effort. "

Racing could then better prevent potential packages from players. "Being less injured will allow them to progress steadily," anticipates the director of the training center, François Keller. Who is already thinking about the possible benefits for the professional team. "We will then be ahead of the other Ligue 1 clubs."
