Starbucks will be offering a vegetarian burger in cafes from March 3 in Canada. The chain has just entered into a partnership with the vegan start-up Beyond Meat to include a herbal burger in its meal offers.

The new sandwich, offered for breakfast, will consist of a burger specially designed by Beyond Meat, placed on an omelet and covered with a slice of cheese, all in brioche bread. Starbucks is thus in the wake of other large fast-food chains, such as Burger King or McDonald's, which have been offering alternatives to meat for a few months.

A booming sector

Starbucks recently set new environmental goals. The chain intends to offer a wider range of products without animal protein, in addition to the vegetable drinks that the chain already serves in its mochas and other cappuccinos. Impossible Burger, the other big vegan start-up of the moment, for its part announced on Monday that its products will be available in the amusement parks and cruises of Disney.

Alternatives to meat have been around for several decades, but Beyond Meat and Impossible Burger are particularly focused on creating plant products that are as close as possible to the taste, texture and flavor of real meat. They have been followed by several food giants such as Kellogg and the meat producer Tyson Foods, who have recently launched new herbal lines.
