27 February 2020Tim has been awarded the tender launched by Infratel Italia for the creation of WiFi connections in over 5,500 Italian municipalities with more than 2,000 inhabitants. By virtue of the agreement signed today, citizens and tourists will have free access to the wifi connections available in the Italian municipalities that will join the Piazza WiFi Italia project.

Born on the initiative of the Ministry of Economic Development and entrusted in October 2019 to Infratel Italia, the project aims to make available a free and widespread wifi network throughout the national territory and provides for the creation of free access connections, in one or more squares of the approximately 8,000 municipalities targeted by the initiative.

Citizens and tourists, both Italian and foreign, will be able to connect to the networks for free through a single app, WiFi.Italia.it, available for Android and iOS devices. Access to the networks will be made possible in the federated municipalities with Piazza WiFi Italia. The updated list is available on the website of the Ministry of Economic Development .

Tim won the tender for the assignment of the 5 lots into which the national territory was divided. The overall value of the project is approximately 33 million euros and, based on the agreement, it will have to supply and install 'access points' and management and control systems, supervision services of the installed equipment and maintenance of the equipment. intended for the dissemination of multimedia content on IP-Content Delivery Network platforms.

How to join
Municipalities can apply for wifi points directly online, by registering on the new web platform accessible on the Mise website. Adherence to the project requires the municipal administrations to sign a special agreement with Infratel Italia, the Ministry's in-house company.

The Government has increased the funds dedicated to the project: to the initial availability of 8 million euros, a new allocation of 45 million has been added to bring new free wifi areas in all Italian municipalities, with priority for those with a population of less than 2,000 inhabitants . The first interventions involved, with a dedicated project, all 138 Municipalities affected by the 2016 earthquake in Abruzzo, Lazio, Marche and Umbria.
