February 26, 2020 For the brothers Fabio and Damiano D'Innocenzo with "La terra dell'abbondanza" the happy virginity of the debut ended and so with "Favolacce", their second film in competition in Berlin, it comes out, beyond their soul authentically pasoliniana, cinephilia. In just under two hours there is a multifaceted exhibition of styles and genres, from Wes Anderson to David Lynch, from Gus Van Sant to Antonioni up to Caligari, all shaken properly. "What is our film? An 'American Beauty' without 'American' and without beauty. So we presented it to the producers to make them understand what our project was", they say in Berlin.

With "Favolacce", very well received with applause yesterday at the first press and in the hall from April 16 with Vision, beyond the eclectic and quotationist style, the two directors have been able to perfectly tell the environment where those sudden tragedies that are the subject of crime news and the result of more cultural than economic poverty. We are in fact in the most isolated residential suburbs of Rome, places where poverty is not really there, but where life flows flat, places inhabited by characters who feel at the same time as arrivals and losers. They are ignorant, eternal seconds, perfect for the "Favolacce" of this film.

This is the case of Bruno (Elio Germano) and Dalila (Barbara Chichiarelli) who raise their teenage children, Denis and Ale, in the apparent quiet of a conglomeration of terraced houses where they are all a bit like them. A couple who is friendly to everyone, so much so that their inflatable swimming pool, the only one they can afford, becomes a meeting point in the neighborhood, but their adult soul remains sterile, childish, unable even to think of any value to transmit to their children.

"Our film is a dark fairy tale between Italo Calvino and Gianni Rodari", say the D'Innocenzo in a press conference full of foreign press too. "It is a film that we had to make as soon as possible because in some way it talks about our childhood and it was important for us to be able to trace, before forgetting everything, to how we teenagers saw the world".

Fabio says: "It is a film written by us at the age of 19 and the two protagonists are none other than me and Damiano as children. This is also why we liked the context of a fairy tale. Childhood is a complicated age because you don't know the rules of the game. Hence the urgency to do it now before you get old. But in this film there are many things: there is Raymond Carver, Scissorhands, my house, the places of my mind and also Spoon River and Charlie Brown ". Cult phrase of the brilliant brothers D'Innocenzo: "We don't want to become directors with a scarf".
