Hendaye customs officials made a record seizure on February 16. They discovered 175 kg of methamphetamine hidden in a semi-trailer intercepted on the highway, not far from the Spanish border, they announced on Wednesday.

The volume seized of this synthetic derivative of amphetamine, very powerful and addictive, "exceeds the total quantities of methamphetamine intercepted in 2018" (108.9 kg out of a total of 184.06 kg of amphetamines), specify the customs. Figures for 2019 are not yet available.

The truck would come from Madrid

During the interception on the A63 motorway, in a south-north direction, the driver assured that he was coming from Madrid and going to the north of France. While searching his trailer, customs officers discovered 18 cartons, 9 filled with cannabis herb and the other 9 with methamphetamine.

A total of 175.32 kg of methamphetamine, with a resale value of around 10 million euros, and 107.18 kg of cannabis herb (€ 700,000) were seized, said Bertrand Bernard, chef from the economic action pole to the regional customs directorate of Bayonne. The two drivers of the semi-trailer were turned over to the police.

On January 30, the same brigade had intercepted 40 kg of amphetamines.
