A few days before the municipal elections of March 15 and 22, nearly 47.7 million people are registered on the French electoral lists, according to figures published by INSEE on Wednesday.
Between April 2019 and February 2020, the number of registrants thus increased by 544,000.
99% of adults under 30 registered
As of February 14, 94% of French people of voting age in mainland France and the French overseas departments were registered on the lists. Thanks to the automatic registration procedure, 99% of adults under 30 are registered in particular. In detail, 47,664,895 people are registered on the electoral rolls, except New Caledonia. 46,026 million are on the main municipal list and 1,308 million French residing outside France on one of the 208 consular lists.
Finally, 329,942 nationals of other countries of the European Union are registered on an additional list. Of the 46 million registered on the main list, 44.3 million are in mainland France, 1.5 million in the French overseas departments and 240,000 in overseas communities, excluding New Caledonia.
Britons struck off list after Brexit
The number of women registered is more than two million higher than that of men, with 24,917 million registered for 22,746 million men. The increase in the number of registrants is partly due to demography. 657,000 young people born in 2001 and early 2002 were automatically registered during the period on the lists, while 409,000 deceased people were struck off, a balance of 248,000.
Added to this are around 52,000 registrations linked to the acquisition of French nationality. The rest comes from new voters who were not previously registered. The Portuguese (111,611) are the most numerous Europeans registered to vote in France, ahead of the Italians (55,343) and the Belgians (47,507). The 46,000 Britons present at the start of the year were struck off the list following Brexit on January 31, said INSEE.
