Los Angeles (dpa) - Former world ranking first Maria Sharapova ends her tennis career. The 32-year-old Russian announced her resignation in an essay for Vanity Fair magazine.

«By devoting my life to tennis, tennis has given me a life. I will miss it every day, »Sharapova wrote. In her dazzling career, she had won five Grand Slam tournaments and was number one in the tennis world for 21 weeks.

After a doping ban, Sharapova had returned to the tennis tour in April 2017, but had not returned to her previous level. In addition to her frequent shoulder problems, she had also recently suffered from a viral disease. "Tennis has shown me the world - and it has shown me what kind of wood I am made of," wrote Sharapova.
