“A few minutes ago, the Council of Europe decided that the CMCE meeting would be held in May not in Tbilisi, but in Strasbourg,” Zalkaliani said.

He noted that he considers this decision to be correct to exclude possible destabilization in the country and to use this issue for political purposes.

According to him, supporting this decision, the Georgian side acted on the basis of state interests and taking into account the large daily challenges.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Georgian journalists “attacked” the Russian delegation at the UN office in Geneva asking if Lavrov would come to Tbilisi.

It was reported that the Foreign Ministry confirmed their participation in the meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on May 14-15, which was to be held in the Georgian capital.

In the summer of 2019, protests were held in Tbilisi. This happened after the Georgian opposition and radicals disrupted the meeting of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy due to the fact that State Duma deputy Sergei Gavrilov, who heads this organization, was sitting in the chair of the head of the legislative body during the event.

The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed the view that the Georgian opposition used the visit of the Russian delegation as a reason for the unrest.
