The Swedish Transport Administration has been commissioned to conduct a feasibility study on the electrification of the Lycksele-Storuman train route. The region of Västerbotten has allocated the funds, which are estimated to cost SEK 9 million, three million remain since the Swedish Transport Administration previously investigated the sub-section of Hällnäs-Lycksele.

- This is a very important project. Both passenger traffic and freight of, for example, timber would be done with climate-smart electric trains instead of diesel trains. To electrify the Crossway is a necessary sustainability measure that benefits the whole of Sweden, says Rickard Carstedt (S), regional council at Region Västerbotten.

Want to be proactive

There is fierce competition for the funds for the development of infrastructure in the country and to be good at when deciding on the national transport plan, the Region Västerbotten wants to be well prepared. A complete study of electrification of the entire track is both helpful when deciding, as well as helping to accelerate the possible implementation of the electrification.

-We were close to come with the latest. We want to help start the process by investigating and doing what we can on our part, says Rickard Carstedt.
