This was reported by TASS with reference to Walters' written opening address to the hearings in the US Senate Committee on Armed Forces.

In his opinion, Russia and Turkey are conflicting due to a number of reasons. In particular, both countries see the Black Sea region as their natural zone of influence, compete in Libya and confront Syrian Idlib.

"The role of Turkey in countering Russia is central ... In the long-term interests of both the United States and Turkey lies the continuation of joint work to develop cooperation against Russia, both bilaterally and through NATO," Walters points out.

Earlier, Turkish Minister of Defense Hulusi Akar said that Washington could supply Ankara with Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems (ADMS) due to the aggravation of the situation in Syrian Idlib.

In February, Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan had a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump, during which they discussed the situation in Idlib.
