Trump completes visit to India with sale of 30 combat helicopters

The American president ended his two-day state visit to India on Tuesday evening without any major trade deal, one of the areas of contention between the two countries. However, Donald Trump made a sale in advance, that of combat helicopters for the Indian army.

In a few years, the United States became the second arms supplier of New Delhi, sign of a strategic rapprochement between the two democracies. Reconciliation on the question of Pakistan, first, but also on China: Washington is counting more than ever on India to counter Chinese expansion in Asia.

"Pakistan was a problem in the Indo-US relationship for 35 years. Now, the United States is no longer providing military aid to Pakistan, and has moved closer to the Indian position. On top of that, China now has a very strong alliance with Pakistan, through its " Silk Road " initiative . On this issue too, the United States and India take the same position. So the two countries got closer quickly on regional issues , ”said Neelam Deo, director of the research center on international relations, Gateway House.
The United States, however, continues to maintain close ties with Pakistan, a country that Washington needs to secure peace in Afghanistan and be able to repatriate its troops.
