Watanabe fell asleep at an old-age home in Joetsu, the same town where he was born on a spring day in 1907. In between, he among other things, he trained in agricultural school, fought in World War II and worked as a government official.

For the Japan Times magazine, he has previously revealed the secret to his long life: "Laughter." Even the world's oldest now living woman, Kane Tanaka, comes from Japan and celebrated her 117th birthday in January.
