The Léo-Lagrange swimming pool in Nantes. - DP / 20 minutes

  • On the Nantes metropolis, the swimming pools, which number fifteen (including six in Nantes), are full.
  • The various candidates for mayor of Nantes are for the construction of new equipment, despite the exorbitant cost of swimming pools.
  • The Nordic basin, supported by a property developer, is the subject of debate between the various candidates.

"The problem of the lack of swimming pools in Nantes does not date from today ..." This bitter observation is signed by Joël Pineau, the president of the Pays-de-la-Loire Swimming League. In the Nantes metropolis, saturation affects clubs as well, notably for the organization of competitions, as schools and residents.

"Projects for new Nantes equipment are welcome," continues Joël Pineau. For several weeks, the latter has not failed to solicit the various candidates for mayor of Nantes. Last week, and to her dismay, only Johanna Rolland had communicated her action plan. Very expensive in construction and maintenance (it takes 15 million euros for a single pool and 25 million for an aquatic center), the aquatic pools, which are 15 in number in the metropolis (including six in Nantes), n nevertheless remain at the heart of the theme of sports infrastructure. Questioned by 20 Minutes , the various candidates for mayor of Nantes all replied (except Hugo Sonnier, UPR) with more or less details.

Where to build new pools?

Equipping the agglomeration with enough aquatic basins so that "100% of schoolchildren can learn to swim" is the sporting priority of the mandate of Johanna Rolland (PS), if she is re-elected. The current mayor has presented a specific action plan to increase the number of water lines, including the creation of equipment in Bouaye, a second pool in Orvault and an Olympic pool in Rezé.

Valérie Oppelt (LREM) wishes to "relaunch a swimming pool project in the southwest of the agglo, between Bouaye and Sainte-Pazanne" and proposes the construction of a swimming pool "on the island of Nantes, for example towards Machines, with an indoor and outdoor pool ". Eléonore Revel (RN) undertakes "to open the file for a swimming pool in Saint-Luce and treat it as a priority". Julie Laernoes (EELV) would launch "studies for the construction of a new site, preferably south Loire". Finally, Laurence Garnier (LR) promises "the creation of a new covered pool at Dervallières [there is one already but it is outside]" and "the study of the creation of a floating pool on the Erdre" . Nicolas Bazille (Lutte Ouvrière) also says "favorable to the construction of new basins to allow in particular the schooled youth of all the districts to have access to it".

Further optimize the equipment in place

According to Margot Medkour (Nantes in common), "the opening hours do not suit all the needs and desires of the inhabitants". According to her, it is necessary to widen the time slots "with an opening from 7 am to 11 pm non-stop (outside school hours) in all swimming pools from Monday to Saturday and from 9 am to 7 pm on Sundays and holidays". Johanna Rolland also develops this idea by adding "free for all children under the age of 8 and for all Nantes residents one Sunday per month".

The northern Saupin basin is making waves

The future Nordic swimming pool, announced for 2023 near the Marcel-Saupin stadium and supported by a property developer, is creating a stir. "It will be adjourned if LREM accesses the town hall," says Valérie Oppelt. "A project that consumes too much energy", judges Mounir Belhamiti, number 2 on the LREM list. Same sentence for Laurence Garnier.

Margot Medkour will put a moratorium on this project. “We do not want to stop it, because we judge that an additional open swimming pool in Nantes is a good thing, but in the current state, this project does not suit us: on the one hand because, as for all large projects carried by the town hall, it is almost impossible to have precise information, on the other hand, it is neither a sports project, nor a project for the inhabitants, but a project of tourist attractiveness. "With Johanna Rolland, Julie Laernoes is ultimately the only one in favor of this equipment:" The Nordic basin is an ecological alternative to the indoor pool by reducing the energy bill by almost half, especially if the heating network is connected to the heating network urban.
