Scotland already offers free menswear to school and university students as well as low-income women. But now the Scottish MPs want the same rules to apply to all women, reports Reuters.

- These are not luxury products. They are necessary and no one in Scotland should have to be without human protection, says Labor politician Monica Lennon who presented the proposal in 2017.

Handed out at pharmacies

In a next step, the Scottish Government will evaluate the proposal and present the necessary amendments.

The investment is expected to cost around £ 24.1 million, about SEK 300 million a year, and the free period protection will be distributed at, among other places, pharmacies and youth clinics.

- We are changing a culture and it is very fun that other countries around the world are closely following what we do, says Lennon.

High mens VAT in Sweden

In the UK, VAT for menswear is 5 percent, and the government has said it wants to completely demolish it. Several countries have chosen not to tax human protection at all, including Ireland, Canada Australia, Kenya, India and Colombia. In Sweden, however, VAT is still at 25 percent.
