At the city-stadium Jamel-Saihi, at Les Arceaux, in Montpellier - N. Bonzom / Maxele Presse

  • The municipal elections are held on March 15 and 22, 2020. Each Monday, “20 Minutes” will address a theme of the campaign. Today, sport in the neighborhoods.
  • For the past six years, the outgoing mayor has notably launched the creation of sports facilities at Parc Montcalm, the project for a new pole dedicated to board sports in Geraardsbergen and opened multisports fields and synthetic football fields.
  • But is it enough? Candidates for municipal elections want to increase the number of sports facilities in the districts, in particular skateparks, city-stadiums, fitness areas, sports routes or climbing walls.

Montpellier is a sports city. With its professional football, rugby, handball or basketball clubs, which flirt with the elite, it is even one of the most sporting cities in France. But in the neighborhoods, is it just as much?

In Montpellier, the city manages 270 sports facilities. Skateparks, climbing walls, small tennis courts or city stadiums, accessible to all. Is it sufficient ? Three weeks before the first round of the municipal elections, 20 Minutes takes stock of the candidates' proposals for sports equipment in the districts.

Patrick Vignal wants to develop the banks of Lez for the practice of water sports

Mohed Altrad (without label) wants the “multiplication of sports facilities” in the districts and promises to “develop outdoor fitness areas”. Kamy Nazarian (UPR) also wants "more equipment for the practice of outdoor sports". Patrick Vignal (LREM), for his part, proposes to develop the banks of Lez for the "practice of nautical sports" and promises to rehabilitate the swimming pool of La Motte Rouge.

The outgoing mayor, Philippe Saurel (various left), also wishes to renovate this swimming pool, which belongs to the university, and promises the creation of new "neighborhood facilities". The elected also proposes to open in Montpellier a "popular football academy", "not for professionals or licensees, but to allow those who want to practice in leisure to be introduced to football outside of clubs".

Coralie Mantion wants to transform the Arceaux car park into a tambourine field

Coralie Mantion (EELV) promises, for its part, to "sanctify" sports facilities in neighborhoods, such as the Père-Prévost or Lieutenant-Normand stadiums, so that "they can no longer be sold", in order to any real estate transactions. The candidate also proposes, in the "priority districts", to create city stadiums and skateparks, as well as sports routes along the Lez.

Coralie Mantion also wishes to set up partnerships, with colleges and high schools, to open their sports facilities, especially gymnasiums, to residents and associations of neighborhoods, when they are no longer used by students. Finally, the candidate proposes, in consultation with the residents of the district, to "transform the Arceaux car park into land for traditional sports, such as tambourine".

We are keen to multiply the layouts "at the foot of the buildings"

Michaël Delafosse (PS) has plans for the Mosson stadium, which will be deserted by the MHSC at the opening of the hypothetical new football stadium, planned for the Cambacérès district. The city councilor proposes to develop it into a sports center, particularly for amateurs who practice "21st century" sports. "A site open to all, for daily sports practice, whether for" traditional "sports, so-called" extreme "sports and also e-sport," said the candidate.

For its part, the We Are movement, led by Alenka Doulain, proposes to associate sports associations and practitioners "in the decision-making process for the creation of new sports equipment" in the districts. The list promises all Montpellier residents to have access to a sports practice, with "local amenities", "low cost, everywhere in the city", "at the foot of the buildings": city stadiums, street areas work-out, marked areas for running or trail running, tackle routes, climbing walls…

Our 2020 Municipal File

Rémi Gaillard (no label), finally, promises sport where it is not expected: the troublemaker of this campaign wishes to transform the very controversial Ode à la mer retail park project into an “eco-district” with, in particular, "sports routes".
