According to Sky News, Francheze at the time of his release from prison in 2017 was the oldest prisoner in the US federal prison system.

Franchese was the second in the hierarchy of the Colombo mafia family in New York until the 90s. Prosecutors called him one of the worst mafia killers.

Franchese was involved in organized crime in 1950 at the age of 33 years. He was first convicted in 1967 for organizing robberies of four banks. During the trial, prosecutors said he boasted of involvement in 50 murders. He himself claimed that he had killed "a lot of people."

Franchese repeatedly went to prison, the last time he was taken into custody in 2011 and released from it in 2017 in the year of his century.

In 2016, the boss of the Italian mafia goat Nostra Bernardo Provenzano, who has been in prison since 2006, died in Italy.
