The Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games assured on Tuesday that the spread of the coronavirus in Japan and more generally in the world had never led to the cancellation of the Olympic fortnight scheduled for July 24 to August 9.

"We have never discussed the cancellation of the Games. The preparation of the Games continues as planned," said Tokyo-2020 in an email to AFP.

Some 156 cases of coronavirus contamination have been recorded in the Japanese archipelago, including one death.

In this context, the Japanese football federation, J-League, announced Tuesday its decision to postpone all the league matches planned in the country until March 15, at least, because of fears of the spread of the coronavirus.

But the Minister of Health Katsunobu Kato has swept him worries about the J0-2020.

"They will take place in July so we are not talking about this situation, we are talking about the government's position now," he told reporters.

China has registered 71 new deaths in the past 24 hours, the lowest number in nearly three weeks, bringing the national death toll to 2,663.

But outside China, contamination is accelerating, especially in South Korea and Iran, while in Italy, the European country most affected with 283 cases including seven deaths, two new regions are affected (Tuscany and Sicily).
