Chinanews.com, February 25th. According to foreign media reports, on the 24th local time, a court in London, England, began hearing the case of WikiLeaks founder Assange's extradition to the United States. During the trial, US attorneys said Assange's behavior puts informants who help the United States at risk.

Assange is reportedly Australian and 48 years old. He was previously accused by the United States of leaking confidential documents and violating anti-espionage laws. If convicted, they face up to 175 years in prison.

During the first day of court hearings, U.S. attorney Louis stated that Assange was wanted by the U.S. government not because he embarrassed the authorities, but because he put informants, dissidents and activists at risk of torture, ill-treatment or death .

However, the lawyers on Assange's side are extremely supporters who believe that if he is extradited to the United States, he will not be subject to a fair trial.

In 2010, WikiLeaks published hundreds of thousands of secret documents on the Internet, mainly related to the Iraq war. The documents contain sensitive information about US operations in Iraq, including killings of civilians and ill-treatment of prisoners.

European Commissioner for Human Rights Mikhatovic also urged Britain not to hand over Assange to the United States, believing that freedom of the press and the rights of the "whistleblower" would be threatened.

In early February, many well-known German politicians and intellectuals also signed an open letter calling for the release of Assange. Hundreds of people marched in London on the 22nd in support of Assange.

In addition, Assange's father Shipton also gave a speech. He said that his long term impaired his son's health and extradition to the United States was tantamount to his death sentence.
