Drinking and driving do not mix well. Driving while intoxicated is the second leading cause of death on roads in France, according to road safety figures. But how do you convince revelers to pay attention to their alcohol consumption?

In Strasbourg, a company specializing in road safety, Drivecase, had the idea of acting on the plastic cup, an object that has become essential in the evenings and festive events in recent years.

An object of prevention

"It is an object of prevention," explains Yves Neymer, co-founder of Drivecase. The idea is to distribute it at the start of the evening. ” The object, graduated and measurable, allows the consumer to more clearly identify his alcohol consumption. Whiskey, wine, beer unit… The main spirits are represented. The cups have graduated tables and preventive messages such as "alcohol is enough" or "the one who drives is the one who does not drink". To design it, the company relied on an expert firm in the prevention of addictive behavior.

As a reminder, French law limits the blood alcohol level while driving to 0.5 g / L of alcohol in the blood, or 0.25 mg per liter of exhaled air. Since July 2015, the statutory rate for young drivers has been lowered to 0.2g / L. Or the equivalent of a glass of wine for a normal license and zero glass for a young driver on a probationary license.

Who is this cup for? Drivecase assures that it has "many CAC 40 companies" as customers, such as Bouygues or RTE (Electricity Transmission Network), but also prefectures, associations and individuals. "It remains a niche market," assures Yves Neymer. But we regularly develop products thanks to customer feedback, that's what happened for this cup. ”

A concept born from a friend's accident

The cup is made of recyclable and reusable plastic. The company, which had its products manufactured in Europe, claims to have gone made in France a few weeks ago. Drivecase is the result of research work created by Yves Neymer and his partner Olivier Clur, six years ago. Its name comes from an emergency case with a mandatory kit of objects such as a yellow vest, a warning triangle and a survival blanket to ride safely.

The idea came to them after the accident in the road of one of their friends. "It was a minor accident but he found himself alone in the rain while waiting for help, that gave us this idea". With this concept, the two entrepreneurs won a regional award that helped them get started.
