  • The municipal elections are held on March 15 and 22, 2020. Each Monday, 20 Minutes will address a theme of the campaign. Today, sports infrastructure.
  • Much is said about the future of the city's two stadiums. The candidates oppose the sale or not of the Matmut Atlantique but they all agree on the renovation of Chaban-Delmas and its annexes.
  • For the practice of skateboarding, everyone has their opinion on the location of a future bowl while to fill the lack of pools, there is no shortage of ideas.

This Monday, candidates for mayor of Bordeaux put on their jerseys and shorts. In the last straight line of this municipal election, they are engaged for 20 minutes on four themes which regularly return to the front of the Bordeaux scene and could make them sweat with heavy drops: The Matmut Atlantique, the Chaban Delmas stadium, the place du skate in the city or the lack of swimming pools.

If on certain subjects they oppose, on others they meet. In particular, they all plan to improve gender parity in daily sport.

  • Or not sell Matmut Atlantique?

It is surely the file which crystallizes the most the oppositions in particular between the two favorites of this election according to the last polls, Nicolas Florian (LR) and Pierre Hurmic (EELV). The first, outgoing mayor, does not wish to touch the PPP (public-private partnership) for the moment: “We are not sellers. Afterwards, if the club wants to buy it, we can discuss it. But it will be complicated. I remind you that it is the cheapest stadium in France. If the Girondins really want exploitation, why not, but you have to see under what conditions. Her sports assistant Arielle Piazza says that "everything is on stand-by" today.

The second wants him to "get rid of a stadium that costs a fortune and end this contract" as quickly as possible. His team is currently studying the legal framework. “Do not come and tell me that the Girondins cannot pay for their work tools. Of the 15 highest ranked football clubs in the UEFA index, 12 own their stadium, ”explains Pierre Hurmic. Philippe Poutou (NPA-LFI) is on the same wavelength: “From the start, it was a useless and aberrant project because there were other priorities, notably social ones. "

If Bruno Paluteau (RN) "wishes to keep it", he "wants to make better use of it and above all diversify its offer". Same desire for Gilles Garçon, the UPR (Union Populaire Républicaine) candidate wishes to build an Olympic swimming pool or a large indoor and outdoor skatepark near the stadium. For the other candidates, there is no decision on the future for Matmut Atlantique. The Republic on the move announces that in the event of victory for Thomas Cazenave, it “will look at this very closely and will not forbid anything on this PPP. "Above all, we want to develop a more global sports offer around the stadium," says Marco Franchi. Pascal Jarti, candidate without a label, "does not exclude the idea of selling it".

  • What renovation project for the Chaban-Delmas stadium and its annexes?

After the opposition, consensus. If there is one subject on which all the candidates come together, it is that of the Chaban-Delmas stadium: "A flagship of the city", "a part of Bordeaux's heritage" ... They are all very attached to the 'enclosure where the Bordeaux-Bègles Union has been performing for a few years.

Built in 1924, the one that some still call Lescure Park is seriously starting to age. They all wish to preserve it, maintain it and renovate it as well as the sports plain (tennis, track, basketball, gymnasium ...) which accompanies it. For the most part (Poutou, Cazenave, Hurmic or even Boy), this will involve consultation with the population to avoid the quirk of Alain Juppé's project four years ago. But few today have a specific project.

Delphine Jamet, elected environmentalist opposition, evokes a project for the stadium annexes with "the idea of creating a large park by connecting it to the Béchade garden". For its part, Arielle Piazza, support of Nicolas Florian announces that the town hall “has received a proposal for the redevelopment of part of the stadium from the UBB very recently. A proposal that she "intends to study in collaboration with the club and Laurent Marti (the president)" in the event of re-election.

  • Where to install the bowl for skaters?

This is one of the sensitive subjects. Or rather, it was because many things have been done in recent years (timetables, mediators) to coexist residents and skaters of Bordeaux. But the latter hope to obtain new equipment which is still lacking in town.

The first of them: a bowl (structure in a bowl). And then everyone has their own idea. The outgoing mayor is considering the creation of a new skatepark on the right bank which would include this bowl: "This would balance this practice with the left bank" for Arielle Piazza. Thomas Cazenave's (LREM) teams want facilities in the 16 neighborhoods he plans to set up and would see this equipment well in Bordeaux-Lac.

"Why not install this bowl during the renovation of the sports plain of the Chaban-Delmas stadium," we slip on the side of environmentalists. Finally, Pascal Jarty, wishes to "create one or even two additional skateparks" while Gilles Garçon wants to "prohibit him from practicing skateboarding in public places".

  • How to solve the lack of swimming pools?

Like most major French cities, Bordeaux lacks swimming pools. It is an old sea serpent. If the renovation of the Gallin swimming pool has finally started, other projects should see the light of day after the municipal election. Most of the candidates for the image of Nicolas Florian and Thomas Cazenave agree on one point: it is necessary to better use current structures and in particular to extend the hourly amplitude with openings earlier for example. They also agree with Pierre Hurmic (EELV) on the passage from the Stéhélin swimming pool to the northern basin. Open only a few months today, it would be open all year round. Pascal Jarty wants to “cover it and build another next to it for the children”.

Several applicants also have this floating swimming pool project. The outgoing mayor has the idea of installing it on the banks of the Garonne, the environmentalists of Delphine Jamet would rather see it at the Bassins à flot. The RN for its part is simply being "favorable to the construction of new swimming pools".

Finally with regard to the major sporting events to come, Arielle Piazza who wants an additional gymnasium at Bacalan and at la Victoire and a sports plain on the quays open during school holidays and not only in summer reminds us that the city is a candidate to welcome the Tour de France in 2021 and 2022. The Republic on the march, if successful on March 15 or 22, intends to relaunch the idea of a great marathon in Bordeaux.

Next Monday, don't miss our sixth episode on major transportation infrastructure.
