The town hall must provide the explanation of the text engraved on the rock thanks to the work of the participants in a competition which it had launched to overcome this well kept secret.

The town hall of Plougastel, in Finistère, will unveil Monday from 11 a.m. the meaning of the mysterious inscriptions of the famous granite rock on its ocean shore. These have been engraved on the Rock of Plougastel since the 18th century without anyone knowing what they mean.

Europe 1 gives you the first sentence

To decipher them, the town hall of the village organized a competition in which 61 "investigators" from all over the world, historians, linguists and mediums, participated. The winner of the best interpretation must pocket 2,000 euros. According to the first known elements, it would be a mixture of Breton languages ​​and local dialects and we should therefore know even more on Monday. But Europe 1 already reveals to you the meaning of its first sentence: "When you read the rock, you will have the truth."

It remains to discover the rest, which was frankly not won for the historian Yves Coativy who piloted the research. "The one who made his inscriptions was not the king of engraving: the writing is bad, the letters are drawn, they are partly nested, and in addition it is missing. In the broken or worn parts, it is difficult to read, which is why we had a hard time deciphering this inscription, "he concludes.
