During the Ciara storm, a fake post was published on Facebook with Båstad municipality's logo. The post went viral and made the municipality's website down for 45-60 minutes as many people visited the website. Something that is now worrying about neighboring politicians.

- The fact that Båstad's website crashed shows that we obviously have a problem and that must be addressed. What would have happened if it had taken a day to fix the page and the storm had gotten worse? says Lars Nyander (S), opposition council in Ängelholm.

Need new system

He says that the municipality of Ängelholm needs a system that prevents the website from crashing because it is important that social information is released on extraordinary occasions.

- We are becoming more and more dependent on the digital conditions, but security is not always the case. One should be able to rely on the municipality's channels being secure. Here we got proof that it was not in Båstad. I do not want this to happen in Ängelholm.

Are you worried that this could affect your municipality?

- Yes, but of course I am. We need to know how to prevent this from happening to us, he says.

Admitted to the City Council

About two weeks ago Lars Nyander sent questions in an interpellation to the chairman of the local council. The questions will be taken to the municipal council on Monday.

- We need to take steps to prevent overload, technically and with the right skills. This is an important issue and we cannot let it pass even though it was a joke in the first place, says Lars Nyander (S).

Unable to protect themselves completely

However, the chairman of the local council Robin Holmberg (M) does not believe that it is possible to do so much more with the security around the municipality's website. In his answer to the questions, he writes that the site's capacity is well developed and adapted to handle large volumes of traffic on special occasions.

But he also writes that it is difficult to protect against people who intentionally use fake posts to drive large amounts of traffic to a web page and thus create an overload.
