The project has three purposes: to enable urban development in the Backaplans area, a new commuter train station in Brunnsbo plus new road connections to the Marieholm tunnel, which opens at the end of the year.

- We do not finish, we give it a restart, says Jörgen Einarsson.

Toni Orsulic: "The control systems worked"

The reason for the delay is that the Swedish Transport Administration rejected the contractor's requested price for an upcoming second stage. An expense that, according to GP, was 700 million above the Swedish Transport Administration's budgeted cost. The Swedish Transport Administration is the builder and accounts for 60 per cent of the cost, the City of Gothenburg accounts for 40 per cent.

"The money is not spent, it will be a delay, but you can say that it is good that the control systems worked," says Toni Orsulic (M) chairman of the traffic committee.

Urban development projects are slowed down

Both urban development in the expansive Backaplan area as well as efforts to make more efficient use of the Marieholm tunnel will now be slowed down. This is because the contractor's cost estimate was close to 60 per cent above the Swedish Transport Administration's estimate.

Have you been overly optimistic in your assessment of costs?

- We are now looking through the project and see what can be accommodated within the budget we have, says Jörgen Einarsson at the Swedish Transport Administration.
