The controversial short tik-to-share app has announced new tools that allow parents to manage their children's screen time along with other functions.

When the feature is activated, teen users will not be able to view videos once they reach the time limit set by a parent.

"We want people to enjoy Tik Tok, but it is also important for our community to care about their interest which means there is a healthy relationship with applications and services online," Cormack Keenan, Head of Trust and Safety at Tik Tok Europe, Middle East and Africa, said in a post on the app blog.

The new Family Safety Mode allows parents to access the Screen Time Management feature introduced by Tik Tok in April 2019 as part of their digital safety tools.

Before that, adults could limit their screen time, but now parents can use the same tools to reduce the amount of time their kids spend on tik tuk.

The new parental controls will be shown in a video series created by Tik Tok in partnership with influencers in the app to educate users about its digital safety tools. These videos look like typical Tik Tok videos, and each one of them leads the user through the function of each tool and how they can activate it.

The Family Safety Mode also allows parents to control who their children can send messages directly to, and enable restricted viewing that blocks inappropriate content.

The announcement comes a year after Tik Tok was fined for collecting children's data. Family Safety is now available in the UK, and will be rolling out in other countries in the coming weeks.
