The situation is sometimes serious for the development along the southern coast of Skåne. A combination of erosion and rising sea levels means that houses run the risk of slipping into the sea. Trelleborg municipality is working on a plan this autumn to secure the municipality's beaches and properties in the future.

- So far we are working so that everyone can stay where they live now and that we will find a shelter that will last for a hundred years anyway, says Johannes Hagström, sustainability strategist in the municipality of Trelleborg.

Different variants of protection

The type of protection that will be provided will vary from place to place. In some places, the construction of ramparts or walls is planned. Elsewhere, the municipality plans to replace or strengthen the exposed beach with sand from the bottom of the sea.

- We must find a solution that protects, while not being an obstacle for those who come to our coast and want to use the beaches, says Johannes Hagström.

The plan for how coastal protection is to be designed should be ready by 2022.
