  • The Gironde unaccompanied minor investigation group (MNA) for departmental security in the Gironde department has just dismantled a concealment network.
  • Six arrests took place and numerous stolen objects were seized in vehicles intended to go to Algeria.
  • Unaccompanied minors were drugged and used to steal from the pay of this network.

It is a great operation for the investigation group MNA (unaccompanied minors) of the departmental security of the Gironde, freshly created in September 2019 to respond to the growing problem of young people (presenting themselves as minors while they are sometimes major) and committing crimes in the Bordeaux conurbation.

In the morning of February 18, the group arrested six people for theft in an organized gang and concealment of theft in an organized gang involving unaccompanied minors. Two of them will soon be summoned by the investigating judge and the other four are referred this Friday and presented to the examining magistrate.

Stolen objects sold in Algeria

"We started working on a family business without being able to highlight the reality of the network and, since November, new elements have enabled us to open an investigation," explains Ronan Illien, police commander and head of the MNA group. Thanks to a work of telephone tapping and surveillance, the group manages to understand that the stealth network is organized around an Algerian family, and that round trips have been taking place every month with Algeria, for several years .

"We made a first start and we were able to challenge several members of the network and vehicles loaded with stolen objects," said Ronan Illien. A total of 91 stolen phones, bicycles, HiFi devices, 19 laptops, tablets, 25 watches and numerous gold jewels, 37,155 euros in cash and two vehicles were seized in this case. "We discovered an order sheet with a value for each object, and the equivalent of prices in Algerian dinars," added the head of the MNA group. We were also able to identify the intermediary, who linked thieves and receivers ”.

Minors drugged by network heads

So many objects which are brought to the head of networks by young minors living in squats of the agglomeration and acting under the influence of the drug. The police also got hold of 589 boxes of opiate drugs "intended to condition minors," said the police commander. The miners received a commission based on the value of the objects stolen for the network.

It is difficult to assess the number of young people captured by this network in the Bordeaux area, but it could be between 50 and 100, according to the police. To bring back their loot, they indulge in pickpocketing from nightclubs or on the streetcar and snatching, especially for jewelry, in the street. For the past year, the police have also noted an increase in burglaries of small businesses, especially very early in the morning.

"This cell is very useful because the phenomenon of unaccompanied minors is particularly significant in Bordeaux and its results are very rapid," welcomes Nicolas Perez, police commissioner. It is no longer a cell but a group integrated into departmental security that will continue. "
