  • The Pyrénées-Atlantiques resorts have used their snow cannons and are announcing good opening rates for their ski areas for school holidays.
  • They also highlight other activities that can be enjoyed in the mountains, such as snowshoeing or dog sledding.

"Stop bashing, we ski in the Pyrenees", was outraged in early February the N'PY agency, which brings together eight Pyrenean ski resorts. If it recognizes that the year is not easy for medium and low altitude stations, it highlights a good level of general opening.

While the winter school holidays begin this Friday evening in the Bordeaux Academy, the resorts of New Aquitaine say they are ready and highlight the diversity of their offers.

Reinforcements with artificial snow

"We produced two large productions of artificial snow on the Gourette station and the area is largely open, from 70 to 80%, explains Claude Weiss, commercial manager of the public establishment of altitude stations (EPSA) which operates Gourette and La Pierre Saint-Martin. At the top of the domain, the snow cover is good and very nice days await the holidaymakers ”.

At Pierre-Saint-Martin, 700 meters of elevation gain are assured and the beginner's area will be fully open. "We carried out reinforcements with artificial snow at the large crossing points and at the lowest altitudes", he underlines. As soon as possible, from -1 ° or -2 ° C, these stations begin to rotate their snow cannons.

"And this is not new, we have been equipped since the 1990s", slips this sales manager. If he recognizes that the conditions are not ideal this year, he believes that "there is a lot to worry about". For several years, the stations have diversified their offers by offering snowshoeing, dog sledding trips ... sometimes by calling on service providers.
