The name of the new corona virus often causes confusion. Hopefully this explanation provides clarity. In the beginning, the WHO health organization chose the temporary name 2019-nCoV , while the virus is actually officially called SARS-CoV-2 . The organization found this name - which is used by the Dutch RIVM - too confusing, because it is too reminiscent of the SARS outbreak in 2002. In the meantime, the WHO has chosen to replace the temporary name 2019-nCoV with the simpler one COVID-19 virus . You therefore become infected with the SARS-CoV-2 (used by RIVM) or COVID-19 virus (used by WHO) and you die from the COVID-19 disease. has chosen to use the names of the WHO. We use coronavirus as a synonym for this virus.
