"Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences to Angela Merkel in connection with the deaths as a result of shooting in the German city of Hanau," the Kremlin website said in a statement.
It was previously reported that a man attacked two hookahs in Hanau. As a result of the attack, nine people were killed, several more were injured. According to reports, the five dead were Turkish citizens.
According to Merkel, the criminal adhered to right-wing extremist views and experienced "hatred of people of a different origin, religion, or other appearance."
