An increasingly warmer climate is detrimental to the mountain fox, which is fully adapted to a life in Arctic conditions, as well as a lack of food where long periods of missing limb years are problematic.

Common Mountain Reef North 2

They are now embarking on a new project, Felles Fjellrev Nord 2, which will continue in the years 2020-2022 to continue being able to help the mountain fox.

The new project will, with the help of GPS technology, give more knowledge about how the mountain foxes move and use the landscape. As well as providing important information needed to strengthen the mountain fox trunk.

In the past, hunting the mountain fox was the biggest threat to the species. Now one of the big threats is king eagle, which takes many fox puppies. The County Administrative Board will now test different methods to protect the mountain foxes from the threat in the air.

sUPPORT

Per-Anders Jonsson is the head of the Nature Conservation Unit at the County Administrative Board, he says that they will continue with various support measures for the mountain fox. Among other things, feeding and hunting of red foxes are planned, as it is also a major threat to the small population of mountain foxes that remain.

- The new project will also provide more knowledge about how the mountain foxes move and utilize the landscape with the help of GPS technology, which is important information when planning measures such as launching feed stations or deploying mountain fox individuals to strengthen the trunk.

Another measure planned is to test new methods for reducing predation on mountain fox puppies of species such as king eagle.
