Reduced study debts for housing in certain municipalities and state takeover of municipal debts in voluntary municipal mergers. So are two of the proposals from the municipal investigation that were presented on Wednesday.

But Borgholm's municipal council Ilko Corkovic (S) says that the municipal investigation will not send the islanders into a new merger discussion.

- No, the islanders have said in a referendum and now we are working on that decision.

And despite the fact that there are municipalities with less than 20,000 inhabitants, they are identified in the municipal survey presented on Wednesday.

- There are municipalities that are smaller than ours, and we see collaboration as a way of working instead of merging municipalities, he says.

Two votes in ten years

By 2019, in a referendum, the islanders said no to merge Borgholm and Mörbylånga into a municipality. The municipal council Ilko Corkovic then voted for a municipal merger - but now he wants to continue working with Borgholm as his own municipality and instead invest in cooperation with the neighboring municipalities.

It was the second time in ten years that the islanders had unequivocally refused to merge Borgholm and Mörbylånga into a joint islandland municipality.

The arguments for a merger have been about finances and coordination gains, but when the islanders went to the polls the answer has been no.
