The operating mode of attacks on Somali army bases is known . The shebabs first launch a car bomb against the gate and then try to take over the premises with weapons in hand. This is what happened on Wednesday in Qoryoley, a hundred kilometers west of Mogadishu. A suicide bomber jumped on a bridge leading to the military compound and blew himself up. Armed groups then harassed troops reduced to defending themselves. According to several sources, weapons were stolen before the attackers' withdrawal.

This attack came a few hours after a first assault on another base in similar circumstances, in Ceel-Salini, about thirty kilometers away. An officer in the Somali army told AFP that they had both been pushed back with the help of the African Union force, Amisom.

And in the same morning, this time in Kenya, a bus driving civilians from Mandera to Nairobi was ambushed. At least three passengers were killed. Since the start of the year, jihadists have stepped up operations across the border in an effort to assert their presence there, including Jan. 5 against US military interests , vowing that Kenya " would never be in security ”.
