The new law means that the police and other law enforcement authorities can get into computers and other types of technical equipment used for communication, such as mobile phones.

The secret data reading may be used for certain preliminary investigations, for the purpose of intelligence and for special foreign control. However, it may only be used in "particularly serious crime".

The law is limited in time and will be valid for five years, after which it will be evaluated.

The proposal was adopted with 286 votes against 26. All left-wing parties pressed the no-button, as did environmentalist Leila Ali-Elmi and partisan Amineh Kakabaveh, former left-wing party.
