In November, EU fisheries ministers decided to ban herring from fishing in the Baltic from May to August this year. This is to protect the threatened Baltic cod during its playing period.

But the decision has major consequences for local fishermen and one of the affected is Lennart Arvidsson from Sölvesborg who has worked as a fisherman for 52 years.

- I could never believe this. Had someone told me last year to stop herring fishing I would have laughed at it, he says.

Want to do research fishing

Together with four other fishing boats in both Karlskrona and Simrishamn, he hopes to be able to carry out research fishing instead during the stopover period.

- We want to verify that cod fishing in the Baltic Sea does not affect the cod and we want to put cameras on the boats to get it verified. In this way, we hope that next year we will be able to counter the stop, he says.

After all, the stop came to protect the cod, didn't it have to be done?

- What it is supposed to do for the cod in the Baltic Sea does not. The big problem is the seal and the stop is totally insane. It's a blow in the air, he says.
