The creation of hydroelectric dams, pollution of rivers and the melting of glaciers linked to global warming have had a huge impact on the number of salmonids. Fanny Agostini decided to call for support for organizations that are fighting for the preservation of salmon such as Logrami and Wild Rivers.

Do Auvergne salmon exist?

Auvergne for a short stay when the time comes for them to lay their eggs. French wild salmonids are endurance animals, they cross the entire Atlantic to reach a few thousand kilometers further on their spawning ground, terminus of Haute-Loire.

This emblematic species finds itself today in a catastrophic situation?

As they have thrived for centuries, the number of salmonids has dropped catastrophically. At the beginning of the 20th century, fishermen in the Loire could catch more than 100,000 salmon each year. Today, they are all breaking a few hundred. It is estimated that the numbers have been divided by five compared to the number of salmon observed in the 1980s. The last census of the Loire basin has just been carried out, on January 21, 2020 and reports only eight salmon present at the stations count.

Why such a slaughter?

This spectacular decrease, which sounds the death knell for their possible disappearance, is explained by several factors such as the creation of hydroelectric dams which prevent them from joining the breeding areas, the pollution of rivers due to industrial activities,
tourism and agriculture, or the melting of glaciers linked to global warming which changes the salinity and temperature of the ocean. Fanny Agostini is appealing to support organizations that are fighting for the preservation of salmon such as Logrami and Wild Rivers. More than ever, they need a media boost and our mobilization so that this emblematic animal which seems familiar to us (because aquaculture farms produce millions for our consumption), is not a wild species.
